Background

The project is part of an educational collaboration, launched in 2017 between the schools of the two cities, the Upper Secondary School Marco Polo in Bari and the Friedrich-List-Berufskolleg in Hamm within the PASCH- school network, an initiative promoted by the German Ministry of Foreign Affairs and supported by the Goethe-Institut. The collaboration was finalized through a twinning signed between Bari and Hamm on 21/5/2021.

The idea

The project, organized over 12 months, intends to investigate the dimension of urban regeneration and the experiences of requalification of abandoned industrial archaeology sites in the two cities, through participatory investigation methodologies, aimed at exploring not only the technical aspects of design, but also the meaning that these places have represented and, in the future, can represent for the communities.
The two cities, in fact, in recent years, have been particularly affected by urban transformation interventions aimed at the requalification of sites and buildings of the twentieth century for cultural and / or environmental purposes (e.g., former factories, manufacturing plants, gasometers, slaughterhouses, barracks, mines).
These spaces have acquired new functions, also thanks to a public debate that involved the entire community on the additional significance that they can have in the city.

OBJECTIVES

The #URBAN VISIONS project intends to develop a joint laboratory of research, comparison, co-planning and urban activism involving the students of the two schools on the relationship between the city archaeological heritage, identity, memory, and the future. 
The outcome of the project is to create a web platform in three languages (Italian, German, English) in order to systematize the collected material regarding the industrial heritage of the two cities and to provide a cultural guide for citizens, students, researchers, and tourists.
